Let’s get started!
Construction workers experience the most workplace accidents, making it the most dangerous industry to work in.
With so many risks on site, knowing how to avoid those hazards can be a matter of life and death.
The frightening facts
It’s off-putting to know that there are so many scary statistics and facts surrounding the trade, according to HSE there were approximately 61,000 non-fatal injuries that happened while at work in the years 2020/2021.
There are many hazards that need to be taken in to account, no matter if you’re working from heights, handling heavy loads, operating dangerous machinery, or working around potentially hazardous materials and substances which contribute to work related injuries and illnesses
On top of this, there are – on average – 37 deaths per year and with 79,000 workers struggling from occupation related health problems like silicosis, musculoskeletal disorders, carpel tunnel syndrome, hand-arm vibration syndrome and many more.
If health and safety requirements are correctly in place, then it can significantly reduce the chances of accidents as well as keeping workers happy and healthy.
Companies need to protect the business too!
It is not only important for workers but businesses to be aware of risks that the construction site poses.
When health and safety processes and procedures have failed, this becomes easy for risks and accidents to occur and if a building site is deemed unsafe, the construction company is open to be fined, sued, or even prohibited from operating – some companies have even had their memberships or accreditations confiscated for not giving workers the correct training.
If a company’s attitude towards health and safety is not up to the standards it should be, it can affect their reputation. This means that clients may not be willing to work with a company because they do not take the health and wellbeing of the employees seriously.
Clients and workers would rather work with construction firms that won’t put them in harm’s way. Companies are valued when they take their staff’s protection onboard – this protects the workforce, community, and the reputation of their business.
How can safety be improved on site?
There are so many ways to improve the safety measures on a construction site:
- Updating risk management – this should be an ongoing process to stay compliant with legislation. These processes offer vital information of risks and how to avoid them
- Train employees– we know it’s not possible to completely eradicate the risks that pose a threat on site, training workers to be health and safety aware to look out for themselves and co-workers can help reduce accidents.
- Have a health and safety plan
- Risk assessments – a valuable instrument to identify where you can minimize threats on site
- Holding regular meetings – listening to employees and co-workers to what concerns they have regarding health and safety and what changes could be enforced.
